I had been diagnosed for a year when I decided to type narcolepsy into the Amazon search bar. Wide Awake and Dreaming was one of the first books that popped up and I immediately downloaded it to my Kindle. I sat and read this book in one day, it was captivating, inspiring, and it gave me hope.

I just graduated from college and am so thankful to Julie because she gave me the determination and the courage to be able to do so. The days when I knew I needed to study, but my body just didn't want to stay awake anymore. Or the days when all of my friends wanted to go out and party all night and I wasn't willing to deal with the consequences the next day. Thank you Julie.

I know have this book in my paperback and a kindle edition. I have given it out to friends and family so they can begin to understand. My Grandma looked at me for the first time and said, "Wow, I get it now. Is that really what you go through?"

Wide Awake and Dreaming A Memoir of Narcolepsy Julie Flygare 9780988314900 Books Reviews

My grandson was diagnosed with a sleep disorder and when I researched his symptoms I found Julie's book. After reading the book I realized how disabling this condition is and how how difficult it is to live and study/work. Julie has been so supportive and knowledgeable that we have found a very experienced and well known doctor that is helping my grandson. This book is an eye opening look at how she handled and is still living with the condition. I would recommend this book for anyone with a sleep disorder or a relative or friend that has this condtion.
Exactly what the doctor ordered! A real life glimpse into the everyday reality of having narcolepsy and cataplexy. I read Julies book a few years after I was diagnosed and before I had met anyone else with this neurological condition. It was raw and vulnerable, I could relate in so many ways, and I didn't feel so alone anymore. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a good read with an intriguing story, anyone with narcolepsy, anyone who has a loved one with narcolepsy, and anyone in the medical community to understand what this complicated illness really is! Well done Julie, thank you for sharing a piece of your journey and thank you for your continued advocacy for all people with narcolepsy!
Julie Flygare's story is an excellent read in so many ways - - intriguing, eye opening, intimate -- and uplifting to the reader. She speaks of sleep, and her experience of narcolepsy, a form of disordered sleep, in a manner that makes both more understandable. The reader learns how one can actually be wide awake, when the characteristics of dream sleep - - involuntary loss of muscle control, sleep attacks, hallucinations - - invade one's ability to function. The author tells of her own discovery of narcolepsy's symptoms, and their devastating impact on her academic efforts, social life, family connections, and even her intimate relations. The reader will come to understand narcolepsy as a rare sleep disorder, and ultimately, the critical importance of sleep in our daily lives. This is a story of courage on the brink of disability, and when challenged to reshape one's life.
Shortly after my 77th birthday my long-suffering symptoms were finally diagnosed as the effects of atypical narcolepsy, without cataplexy. (My REM begins barely after 20 minutes of sleep during the test, so I don’t get the diagnosis respected by medicare.) Julie Flygare’s memoire arrived late yesterday, and I finished reading it at noon today (in the doctor’s office). Although the amazing author is young, her ability to attend to details is astonishing, as though changes occur almost fractally - differents sorts of pain (when and where and why, and caused by what?), changing feelings and emotions (Is it the narco brain that’s causing my suddenly grouchy relationship with friends and family? The Xyrem? The modafinil? My usual neurotic tendancies?), altering notions of her own personhood (Is this really me? Sure? Who else might I become? How?), fickle desire (Am I doing what I really want? Or what my father wants? Or my friends? Can I keep this up, imagining I can slip into party mode and feel like myself?) The writer allows the reader a dizzying recognition of what it’s like when the psyche and soma are egging each other on in their crazy dance, stoned by a tiny miscalculation in the brain. Stoned is how I myself feel when the little hallucinations happen, not nearly as dramatic as those the author describes. I knew little about narcolepsy until this year, and after reading everything available online, I must insist that Wide Awake and Dreaming leaves me with a kind of knowledge that scientific descriptions cannot provide. Thank you, young and beautiful and brilliant and generous Julie Flygare!
Amazing autobiography of a woman realizing and being diagnosed with Narcolepsy. For me it was even more eye opening as my eldest daughter was diagnosed with this while also in college and now my youngest daughter has been diagnosed with Narcolepsy as well. I am ashamed that I didn't realize the many triggers for the illness.

The book is well written, easy to understand and she is very straightforward with her symptoms and reactions to everyday life that we take for granted. I recommend it to anyone who even thinks they have a sleep disorder or has someone in their life that has one. It gives you insight into what they are feeling and an understanding for what they are going through.
I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy in the late 2000's. This is the book I wish I could make my friends and family read. So many people understand this as only the affliction of comedic disasters, on the silver screen, and amusing puppies on the internet. Her writing style is concise and without embellishment, much as one would expect from an attorney. However, this book is immensely approachable, witty, and deeply personal. My only disappointment, is that this book ended. I hope she writes a follow-up chronicling what she has done in the non-profit sector.
