The story is cute and the art is very well done. Celestine loses her favorite toy in the snow and ernest works hard to replace it. The love Ernest shows her and the love she has for her toy and the joy of sharing are all very evident.
For very young children, this is great but for a child who likes to ask questions, this book holds plenty. Such as "Why didn't Ernest just rescue the frozen toy?" Is Ernest her dad? She lives with his so he must be. Why doesn't she call him that and why is he a bear and not a mouse like her"
When reading this book with a small group of children at the library, I was bombarded with these questions. I could make assumptions to go with it but I hate doing that to another's work. So it did cost the book. But still, overall work the read and the classic art style is wonderful.
Adults & children alike can relate to a child losing a cherished toy, which is what happens when Ernest & Celestine go for a walk in the snow, & Celestine inadvertently drops her stuffed bird, Gideon. Ernest buys an assortment of appealing substitutes, but none is adequate. Ernest meticulously recreates Gideon from Celestine's vivid recollection, resulting in the perfect happy Christmas gift. This story was appealing to me & my 7 yr old daughter entering 2nd grade. She has played countless hrs w/various special dolls & stuffed animals. Countless times I have been called upon, not to recreate lost favorites, but to mend damage, or create new costumes, etc. Gabrielle Vincent's Ernest & Celestine series is appealing for the endearing young & old characters, the relationship between them, & the simplicity of the tales. The illustrations come alive.

Ernest the bear cares for Celestine the mouse in such gentle loving ways. She has him wrapped around her little finger, but you love both of them. This lovely book will make you feel good.
Gabrielle Vincent is wonderful, and Ernest and Celestine are two of the sweetest characters in children's literature. I wish these books were still in print.
I ordered two copies of this book because I recalled loving it as a child and it seems to have disappeared from the library. I gave one to my three year old sister and kept one for myself ) She seems to love it and asked that I read it to her, which was very special. I think the story is one that every child can identify with and I remember being fascinated by the artwork when I was little, which is no less gorgeous to me though more than 20 years have passed. My step mother complimented me on always giving books that can't be found in the library, so chances are, this book will be brand new to whomever receives it )
