love, love, love lisa kleypas books . so i was shocked that she could write a book this bad.
i like light and fluffy as opposed to angsty romances but this was so light it was invisable. there's no dramatic tension between the h and h. lisa fills more page space talking about Avery's (the heroine's)catering skills than she does with dialogue between the h and h. in fact the hero ( Joe Travis) barely makes an appearance for almost half the book. The heroine isn't very likable either. She has reason to be reluctant about romance but her whining seems to prevent her from displaying any likable personality traits.
there are lots of secondary characters floating around such as ... The hero's family from the first novels... While it's nice to see a few of my favorite characters from the past, they take up to much space here . (why does a Travis always have a medical emergency? Lisa used that trope in two other books in the series and instead of creating suspense it was just tedious . the hero' s emotional connection to the sick character, although a sibling , is superficially established so it feels like an "everything but the kitchen sink" plotline
There's also a secondary romance, which is unusual for Kleypas books, (though this romance is marginally more interesting than the primary one!)
The only reason I give Brown Eyed Girl two stars is because Lisa still knows how to construct a sentence. Her writing style is excellent. And so are the sex scenes. Lisa's sex scenes are steamier than those found in erotic romance!

I'm hoping Brown Eyed Girl is an aberration and lisa' s back in form for her next novel.. An historical romance.. I hate to think that Lisa's best days writing romance are gone.. What a drag that would be for romance fans!

BrownEyed Girl 9780349401782 Books Reviews

Would have given it 2.5 stars, but since that is not possible I opted for two stars. After waiting such a long time for this book, shelling out the $13.00 bucks, and then the book sucks! What the heck happened, I loved the other books in the series. This book to me felt rushed, like OK, everyone asks for Joe's book, let's just throw something together to get it done! So many of the things in the book did not make sense. There really was not a lot of heat between the H and h either. The secondary characters ( future bride and groom ) made even less sense or to my mind no one would believe the scenario about the money angle ( future bride comes from lots of money herself, hellllllo! ). Just a bad book all the way around, could have been great with a little bit of care from the author. This last book in the series ruined my faith in this author. Will not buy her again, and used to pick up everything new by her without fail. Sorry, very disappointed.
Even a 3 star read from Ms Kleypas is better than most romance offerings. Whilst I had a lot of issues with this story it still kept me interested, was a pleasant enough read, had some good emotional depth, good tie-ins to the rest of the series (other characters from the series make an appearance but without too much re-hashing of their stories) and it is relatively error free with some delightful turns of phrase (champagne like starlight on the tongue).

However there are just too many problems to make this a great read. First Avery and Joe are pale imitations of Ella and Jack from the previous story. Avery is sassy and independent like Ella but harder and less rational making her less likeable. She also has almost the same commitment issues as Ella so no real new emotional complexities to explore in this story. Joe is a less charming version of Jack but like Jack with Ella falls instantly in love with Avery and spends the story convincing Avery that they make sense as a couple just like Jack had to do with Ella. I was also a bit troubled by Joe's aggressive seduction. There were numerous scenes where Avery repeatedly said no but Joe wouldn't accept that (not forced sex but when she refused dates or tried to get out of an embrace etc.). As other reviewers have said there is no real sense of who Joe is and he seems rather aimless.

Secondly there are too many mini-plots which are raised in the first third of the book, then not explored at all until about the last quarter where they reappear and are resolved in a rushed ending.

Thirdly some of the plot lines are silly and have gaping holes. **Spoilers Why did Bethany need to marry Ryan for his money? She is from a fabulously wealthy family herself and there is no suggestion that her family will disown her if she has a baby out of wedlock or doesn't marry into a "good" family. Surely her family is going to support her financially?

There is also the silly ruse Avery uses to get Joe to come over by stealing his camera. Why didn't she just invite him over? It wasn't as though he wouldn't work out that it was a ruse so if she was trying to engineer a meeting without it being obvious then it was a fail. It was also a bit galling given that she had denounced Joe as not a serious photographer but a trust fund baby playing at a job even though he was award winning. She then treats his career as not serious by taking a camera which he needed for his work (and I guess he proves her point because on discovering his camera has been taken by Avery he promptly cancels his shoot scheduled for that evening in order to spend time with her).

Finally it's annoying when an author can't keep her own story straight. Carrington is Liberty's sister in earlier books but is introduced here as sister of Liberty's son.
I started to write a review earlier and deleted it.....I didn't have the heart to continue with such a negative review. Then I read the other reviews and was so glad to see it wasn't just me. Lisa Kleypas just phoned this one in....to my dismay! I love the earlier books in this series and waited, like so many, for this one to come out. I wished I had all that energy back! I can't add to what the others have said other than it was such a disappointment and not typical Lisa Kleypas material. The story was blah, the characters were not developed at all....I have thought about reading it again to give it another chance but don't want to waste my time...think I'll just read Sugar Daddy again......
